THREE DAYS RESIDENTIAL TRAINING OF TRAINERS FOR OBANLIKU/EZZA SOUTH COMMUNITY WOMEN ON STRENGTHENING THEIR CAPACITIES TO PREVENT AND RESPOND TO VAWG/SGBV/HP/SRHR

In strengthening capacities of women’s right organizations capacity, WILPF Nigeria organized a three days residential training for women’s group from Obanliku LGA of Cross River state in Calabar and Ezza south LGA of Ebonyi State in Abakaliki.m in the month of March 2021. The training objectives were met by introducing participants to the scope of Gender and concepts of Gender, Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV), Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), Harmful practices (HP), Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). They were able to better contextualize these with background knowledge on legal frameworks which were shared with them.
 Communication and Public Speaking skills were critical lessons the participants were introduced to, to arm them with basics to communicate appropriate and intended message in favour of their chosen advocacies.
The art of planning advocacy was taught to help participants maximize impact of their intended advocacies. The link between planning advocacies and mapping allies for the successful implementation of the advocacy were explored. Some advocacy tools and social accountability mechanisms were taught to enable the participants engage in their advocacies and ways to monitor the output of some of these advocacies. The impact of engaging men and boys was explored and the added benefits of having religious and traditional leaders as allies in advocacy were explored. The value of these social accountability tools to help secure strong leadership establish a formal structure, engage diverse organizations, community leaders, and residents; ensure authentic participation and share decision making, ensure authentic and productive roles for young people, develop a shared vision, conduct a needs assessment, establish effective channels for internal communication, educate the community, conduct process and outcome evaluation and evaluate the community mobilization effort separately were widely explored.
Training Methodology:
The training methodology used were:
Individual Pre and Post Training assessment
Group and individual activities
Group and individual presentations
Plenary discussions.
Through the training the participants had an increased understanding thus achieving the objectives of the three days residential training. This we identified through the pre and post test conducted. The women also designed a training work plan which will be used to run step down training for other women at their various communities thereby strengthening capacities of other women on gender based violence.
